As COVID-19 spreads around the world, customers are asking us how CBD can help.
For most of us in the western world, the spread of a pandemic is a new experience. We’ve been relatively protected from them over the last 100 years, which means that, as infection rates of COVID-19 have grown over the last few weeks, many of us have felt a little scared and alarmed. It’s easy to forget that these kinds of pandemics have happened fairly regularly throughout history and that our best defense against the virus is simply to follow the advice of public health officials and keep our mind and body healthy and strong. That being said, customers have asked us how CBD can help, and the good news is, a healthy immune system may support you during this pandemic, and CBD is great for immune support.
Viruses and The Immune System
First, we must start by saying that COVID-19 is a virus, which means the strength of your immune system does not play into whether you contract it or not. What helps to stop you from getting an infection with COVID-19 has already been well documented—social distancing and good hygiene.
However, if you do contract the virus, it’s the job of your immune system is to fight it off, working to reduce the severity of symptoms you experience and how long the virus lives inside your body. Given that it’s estimated around 70% of the global population will contract coronavirus before a vaccine is created, having a strong immune system right now is our best defense, and CBD may help support your immune system’s strength.
CBD, The Endocannabinoid System and The Immune System
Unfortunately, we still know very little about how CBD, the Endocannabinoid system and the immune system work together. We have evidence to suggest that the Endocannabinoid System helps to regulate far more than just our immune system, but again, we’re still not sure what and how. We also have evidence of great medicinal results of CBD for different diseases and ailments, but we need more studies before anyone starts making FDA approved claims.
Most studies are done on CBD isolate to try and minimize the variables, but BioCBD+ is a whole plant, full-spectrum CBD, with terpenes, flavonoids and a host of minor cannabinoids, which makes it incredibly complex to study. In the absence of science, we default to qualitative evidence from our customers, which you can find in the form of reviews below here.
However, we do know that CBD may help boost the immune system through sleep and stress management, both of which have fundamental implications in immune system function.
Sleep & Immune System Function
Scientific studies have long shown a strong relationship between sleep and immune system function. People who don’t get quality sleep, or enough sleep, are more likely to get sick after being exposed to a virus and recover slower overall. CBD has shown preliminary evidence that suggests it helps promote better sleep. This study, published in 2017, states that “preliminary research into cannabis and insomnia suggests that cannabidiol (CBD) may have therapeutic potential for the treatment of insomnia…” While we still need more research to determine conclusively the effect of CBD on sleep, the results so far look promising.
Stress and Immune System Function
We are living in stressful times. Stress has a significant impact on the immune system. In this study done in 2019, scientists analyzed the impact of CBD on 72 adults presenting with anxiety or poor sleep. Anxiety scores decreased within the first month in 57 patients (79.2%) and remained decreased during the study duration. Sleep scores improved within the first month in 48 patients (66.7%) but fluctuated over time.
A recent surge in scientific publications has found preclinical and clinical evidence pointing toward a calming effect for CBD in the central nervous system, helping to reduce stress. Broadly speaking, CBD seems to exert a calming effect on the central nervous system. While this has been widely known anecdotally, it was only recently that a study specifically examined whether CBD could be an effective treatment for stress and anxiety.
The number one thing you can do to avoid contracting coronavirus is social distancing and practicing good hygiene. Beyond that, getting adequate sleep, and reducing stress levels keep your immune system healthy and strong, so that, if you do contract the virus, you’ll experience mild symptoms and your body will fight it off quickly. For that, CBD may help.
