So what is psychological safety? According to Google’s Project Aristotle, psychological safety is the most important component to having a successful work team. By Google’s definition, psychological safety means, “Team members feel safe to take risks and be vulnerable in front of each other.” The concept was originally defined by Amy Edmondson, organizational behavioral therapist and Novartis Professor of Leadership and Management at the Harvard Business School. How to Cultivate Psychological Safety at Work

Risk and vulnerability take many forms in a workplace. We know we’ve achieved full psychological safety at work when we can take a risk or be vulnerable from any angle, and still feel safe, supported, and heard while doing so.

There are multiple layers to creating a psychologically safe work environment. Making psychological safety part of the company culture means that everyone, from the C-Suite to employees, must be invested in the concept.

Business leaders such as CEOs, managers, and team leaders should focus on building a workplace that revolves around psychological safety. In the same way, employees need to work together to nurture a safe culture. If you’re self-employed, then you’ll want to cultivate a work environment that nurtures your mind and spirit.

According to Edmondson, workplace leaders should focus on framing problems as things the team can learn from, rather than pointing fingers at individuals for how they executed the solution. They should also admit that they make mistakes, just like everyone else. Leaders should stay curious at all times, and be willing to ask questions so they can fully understand issues that arise.

  • Don’t fear repercussions for speaking up about a problem.

  • Feel embraced and included despite your differences, and this is echoed throughout the work environment.
  • Know you can ask your teammates or managers for help.
  • Feel as though your team and your company value your talents and expertise.
