Something Is Shifting in How America Talks About Plants
A quiet but significant moment for natural wellness, and what it means for the rest of us
On a Saturday in April, something unusual happened in the Oval Office.
The President of the United States sat at the Resolute Desk and signed an executive order directing the FDA to accelerate its review of plant-based compounds for mental wellness. Standing behind him were an HHS Secretary who has spoken openly about natural medicine, an FDA Commissioner, a decorated Navy SEAL, and (perhaps most tellingly) a podcaster who has spent years championing plant wisdom to an audience of millions.
Ten years ago, that photograph would have been unimaginable.
We’re not going to weigh in on the specifics of the order itself. That’s a complicated regulatory conversation involving compounds that are very different from what we make, and we’ll leave the clinical debate to the clinicians. But we do want to talk about what this moment signals, because if you’ve been part of the biocbd+ community for any length of time, you’re living proof that the signal matters.
The Overton Window Just Moved
There’s a term in political and cultural theory called the Overton window. It describes the range of ideas that are considered acceptable to discuss in public. Things outside the window are dismissed, ridiculed, or ignored. Things inside the window are debated seriously.
For most of the last century, the idea that plants (ancient, unpatented, grown in soil) could play a serious role in how we care for our minds and bodies sat firmly outside that window in mainstream American policy. Pharmaceutical solutions were inside. Plant solutions were folk wisdom, dismissed as unscientific or worse.
That is changing. And it’s not changing because of one executive order. The order is a symptom of a much deeper shift that has been underway for years.
Harvard, Johns Hopkins, and Stanford have been publishing peer-reviewed research on plant compounds and mental wellness.
Major medical centers now have integrative medicine departments where they didn’t exist a generation ago.
Veterans, perhaps the most credible voices in any conversation about healing, have been advocating openly for plant-based approaches to recovery.
The CDC reports that more than half of American adults now use at least one complementary health approach in a given year.
What happened in the Oval Office was the federal government finally acknowledging what millions of Americans (our customers, our community, maybe you) have known for a long time:
Plants have wisdom. Science is finally catching up.
What Ayurveda Has Known for 5,000 Years
We started biocbd+ in 2014 because we believed two things that felt, at the time, slightly heretical in the wellness industry.
First, that ancient traditions deserve our respect. Ayurveda, the traditional medicine system of India, has been carefully observing the effects of plants on the human body for roughly 5,000 years. Turmeric, ashwagandha, ginger, and the botanical allies we formulate with are not trends. They are time-tested allies that entire civilizations have relied on across generations.
Second, that modern science can honor that wisdom without replacing it. Our patented water-soluble nanotechnology wasn’t designed to prove Ayurveda right. It was designed to help the body absorb these plants more efficiently, so the wisdom they carry can actually reach the cells that need it.
For a long time, holding both of those beliefs at once felt like swimming upstream. The wellness conversation was either “ancient wisdom, no science” or “pharmaceutical science, no tradition.” We’ve always thought that was a false choice.
The cultural shift happening right now, the one that put plants on the Oval Office agenda, is at its heart a rejection of that false choice. More and more people are asking: what if the old knowledge and the new research can work together?
That’s the question we wake up to every day.
Why This Moment Matters for Daily Wellness
It’s important to be clear about something. The most dramatic headlines from this news cycle are about acute, clinician-administered interventions for serious conditions. That’s a different universe from what we do at biocbd+.
We are not a clinic. We are not a prescription. We are the daily ritual: the morning capsule, the evening topical, the small consistent act of caring for yourself that adds up over weeks and months and years.
That distinction actually matters more now, not less. Because as the broader conversation about plant-based wellness enters the mainstream, more people are going to ask a very reasonable question:
“What does a daily plant-based wellness practice look like for someone who isn’t in crisis, someone who just wants to feel their best, support their body through stress, and age with vitality?”
That question is exactly what we’ve been answering for eleven years.
A daily practice of hemp-derived CBD paired with organic turmeric and traditional botanicals isn’t an emergency intervention. It’s the opposite. It’s the quiet, consistent, grounding baseline that supports your nervous system, your recovery, and your sense of everyday ease, so that life’s bigger moments find you more resourced, not less.
The Veterans Who Changed the Conversation
We can’t write about this moment without acknowledging the veterans who have, quite literally, put themselves on the line to advance the conversation about plant-based wellness.
Veterans have been some of the most thoughtful, persistent advocates for natural approaches to recovery and resilience. They’ve traveled to other countries when options weren’t available here. They’ve shared their stories publicly, at personal cost, because they believed other veterans deserved more choices.
biocbd+ runs a veterans program because we believe those who served deserve support that meets them with dignity, not a marketing angle, but a real commitment. The fact that veteran voices are now being heard at the highest levels of government is a moment of long-overdue recognition. We’re grateful for every one of the veterans in our own community who has trusted us to be part of their wellness routine.
What This Means for You
You don’t need permission from Washington to care for yourself with plants. Humans have been doing that since long before there were governments.
But it does mean something when the cultural conversation shifts. It means:
More research funding will flow into studying plants and the human body, which benefits everyone.
More conversations at kitchen tables and doctor’s offices about integrative approaches, without the old stigma.
More openness from the skeptics in your life who may have dismissed plant-based wellness as fringe.
More legitimacy for companies like ours to talk openly about the science of bioavailability, the wisdom of Ayurveda, and the quiet power of a consistent daily practice.
If you’ve been part of the biocbd+ family for a while, you already know this. You were early. You trusted the plants, and the research behind them, before the headlines caught up.
To the rest of the world: welcome. There’s room at the table.
A Final Word
We believe in humility. We don’t make grand claims. We make carefully formulated products that combine hemp-derived CBD with organic turmeric and traditional Ayurvedic botanicals, delivered through a water-soluble technology designed for better absorption. We are a small team of three people in Boulder, Colorado, who answer our own emails and know many of our longtime customers by name.
What we’re feeling right now isn’t vindication. It’s something gentler, a sense that the work we’ve been doing, and the ancient wisdom we’ve been honoring, is being met by a world that’s finally ready to listen.
We’ll keep doing what we’ve always done: honoring the plants, respecting the science, and showing up for the people who trust us with their daily wellness.
Thank you for being here.
With warmth, The biocbd+ Team
